Why are the stone temple pilots so overrated(as a grunge band)?

I understand purple was part of the big of grunge(dirt, superunknown, nevermind, ten) First of all, on innovation, they were last. Many of their riffs were influenced by earlier grunge bands. Also, interstate love song lasted much longer than any other grunge song on the billboard 200 #1 spot. There are obviously better grunge songs than that, like their own vasoline and type thing. smells like teen spirit never even neared the #1 spot. neither did any other grunge song. They can be described as vital to the grunge movement, but on a public poll, they were well ahead of soundgarden, nirvana, and pearl jam as the best grunge band. That is laughable. Why?
