Who invaded Afghanistan in 1978?

Ive been trying to research it, but I have found dates and information that is contradicting. I found information on an invasion by the Soviet Union, however the dates for that list the year 1979. They key event that show up for 1978 is the Coup d'etat. Could that be considered an invasion on Afghanistan? If so, who enacted it? Why did it take place?
