How do you feel about 1997 airbags ? My mum borrowed my car and thinks I should get a new car for my safety.?

It's a Dec 1996 Holden Commodore acclaim. I've kept the car looking nice, it's got a powerful engine and new tyres. But my parents think my car skids in the wet. They're safety obsessive and think that my car isn't worth new airbags, I should just get a new car.
